Beginning Sunday, March 22 Abingdon United Methodist Church temporarily moved worship on-line as our country fights the Coronavirus and will have no in-person worship. We will work to have vibrant worship even from living rooms and kitchens. We will worship each Sunday at 11:00am to give our musicians and tech people plenty of time each morning to ensure everything can go smoothly with this new format of worship.Worship will stream, live on Facebook. Full Worship videos will be posted to our YouTube channel and "Worship at Home" on our website each week after worship. Please sign in during worship by commenting or liking whether you watch live on Sunday or during the week. We want to know our reach and effectiveness, and to be able to better gauge the health of our congregation during this difficult time.
Everyone in the church is asked to consider participating in worship! We will be asking people who normally sign up as liturgists to record prayers on their phones and computers and send them in (maybe some new people would be interested in that???). Anyone can submit a prayer concern in the comments during our on-line worship, but we will also have a "Google Meet" during the week on which people can share their joys & concerns with one another and that video can be shared during our Sunday morning online worship. More information will be on social media and this page soon.
There are no baskets to pass for offering, but plenty of reasons and ways to give. There are no fees for people to use their bank's online bill pay system. We also have on-line giving available through our website. Please consider either of these methods. If using our on-line giving system, please know that we pay a small transaction fee of .8% if a bank account or a much larger fee of 2.9% is charged if using credit card. To use online banking for free, please go to your bank website to get started. To use our online giving system, you may go to our online giving page on our website.
In order to have vibrant worship over the next weeks we need help with music. I'm asking that those with musical talents would consider sharing their vocal and instrumental abilities from home. Simply get someone to use a smartphone or digital camera/camcorder to record a performance and then contact me for help uploading it. To upload it, email, call, text or Facebook messenger me and I'll send you instructions (I don't like to put my cell number out publicly on the internet).
During the prayer time on Sunday morning people can share joys and concerns in the comments during the live stream, but I will also be on Google Meet Thursdays at 7:00pm (please check the website calendar) and I invite the people of the congregation to meet me there to share joys and concerns together and then I will share that video during worship. To join, just click this link between 6:50 and 7pm or call 470-839-8155 and enter the pin: 505 656 965#. This link and phone number should be valid each week.
Each Sunday morning, we offer two different worship services. The message is the same; however, the format is different.
At 8:30am we have a "traditional" worship service. This service uses hymns, an organ or piano, and is especially interactive with liturgies spoken between the leaders and the worshipers. We open with a prelude, call to worship, opening prayer and hymn; We share joys and concerns, pray as a congregation, collect a morning offering and sing a hymn as we prepare to hear God's word; A sermon rooted in scripture but related to our current reality is shared; and we close each week with a hymn and postlude.
At 11:00am we encounter God through a "contemporary" worship experience. This service is filled with recent Christian worship songs and has a very relaxed atmosphere. We open with worship songs, have prayer and offering, a sermon rooted in scripture but related to our current reality, and close with worship songs. Our altar rail is always open as worship closes for those who wish to pray down in front.
Both services offer Children's Church which provides those ages 5 and under and opportunity to learn music and crafts that tie in with the day's message. Nursery care is also available.
For those that are hard of hearing or that could benefit from larger texts, we offer large-print hymnals and assistive hearing devices. Please check with an greeter and they will assist you.
