Sermon Leftovers 1/7/24

I often ask, why God? Not always in outrage but most of the time in an inquisitive way because I just do not understand why. The book of Revelation says this in chapter 21, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.” my questioning nature asks why does it need to be new?

In diving in I think that this has to do with the perfect nature of the Triune God. This scripture continues on to show how God is taking the pain and the heartache away from humanity that God created. These pains and heartaches are the fruit of sin in the world. To defeat sin God decided to make all things new. God would go to any lengths to defeat sin.

This is not the first time this has happened. God sent Jesus in a way that looked like a new creation in the form of a baby born in a manger. Jesus lived, taught, was brutally killed and destroyed the penalty of sin. This was through the act of God’s new creation that is cleansing us and wooing us into a deeper connection with God.

One thing I have learned throughout study of the bible is that questions are welcomed and healthy on one condition, we trust that God is still working to defeat the sin around us and bring us in deeper connection in love. Let us live in that freedom today!
