Services for Doris Brooks Platt


Please pray for the family and friends of Doris Brooks Platt who died on January 27, 2020. Visitation will be held 5 - 7 p.m. Fri., Jan. 31 and the funeral will be at 11a.m. on Sat., Feb. 1, 2020 at the church.

Mrs. Doris Louise Brooks Platt, 85 of Abingdon, passed away at 2:04 a.m. Monday, January 27, 2020 at the Roseville Rehabilitation and Health Care in Roseville.

She was born July 18, 1934 in Brown County, Illinois, the daughter of Charles M. and Doris F. (Goertz) Bowen.  She married Glenn L. Brooks and they later divorced.


Doris is survived by her children, G. Michael (and Ronda) Brooks of rural Gilson, Judith (and David) Downin of rural Berwick, Dale (and Amy) Brooks of Abingdon, Doris Kay (and Rodney) Williams of Abingdon, Chuck Brooks of rural Galesburg and Paul (and Greta) Brooks of rural Heyworth; 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Charlotte Stinson of Abingdon.


She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter-in-law, Dawn Brooks and a great grandson.


Doris attended grade school in Clayton, Illinois and high school at Valley High School in Fairview and later earned her GED.  She was a seamstress and owned and operated Doris’s Sew Shop in Abingdon and even had a doll hospital.  She was a vendor in the early years of the Knox County Scenic Drive.  She had also worked in sales at the J.C. Penney Store in Galesburg and Shanks Clothing Store in Abingdon and sold Avon Products.  She was a member of the Congregational Church in Abingdon and served as a Sunday school teacher.  She was a Cub Scout and Brownie Leader.  But most of all, she was a loving and caring Mother.


Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2020 at the Abingdon United Methodist Church, 401 N. Washington St. in Abingdon.  Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the church.  Rev. Scott Carnes will officiate.  Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
